French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected the idea of a government led by the left-wing New Popular Front alliance (NFP) following their win in the legislative election. Macron cited the need for institutional stability and questioned the left’s ability to win a confidence vote in parliament. In response, the NFP called for protests and Macron’s impeachment. Macron, who came second, is now consulting with party leaders and urging cooperation from the left with other political forces to form a new government.
Despite no single group securing a majority in the election, the NFP gained the most seats, followed by Macron’s centrist alliance and the far-right National Rally (RN). A caretaker government has been in place, angering the NFP. Macron emphasized the need for the country to avoid being blocked or weakened, prompting calls for collaboration from other parties. The NFP’s candidate for prime minister, Lucie Castets, has faced opposition, with Ensemble and RN promising to vote down NFP candidates. Alternative candidates like Bernard Cazeneuve and Xavier Bertrand are being considered in political circles as discussions continue to form a new government in France.
