Ex-weapons inspector: Putin is ‘very rational’ – World

Former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, in an interview from his home in Stockholm, believes Russian President Vladimir Putin will not risk a catastrophe at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Blix, known for his role in Iraq prior to the Gulf War, spoke on various global issues, including the current situation in Ukraine.

Reflecting on past conflicts and his book “A Farewell to Wars,” Blix called both the Iraq War and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “aberrations.” He expressed optimism for the future, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to address pressing challenges like climate change and pandemics.

Despite escalating tensions, Blix maintained faith in the rationality of world leaders and the avoidance of direct confrontation between major powers. He dismissed concerns about Putin’s nuclear threats, highlighting the deterrent aspect of mutually assured destruction.

Looking ahead, Blix predicted a gradual return of Russia to the international community post-Ukraine conflict, urging a multilateral approach to solve complex global issues. With a wealth of experience in international diplomacy, Blix remains hopeful for a more peaceful and collaborative future.
