Canada has announced tightened rules for temporary foreign workers, reducing the number of permits allowed in an effort to address the surge of newcomers in the country. The new rules include reinstating a ban on temporary permits for low-wage jobs in cities with high unemployment rates.
With Canada’s population surpassing 40 million, there has been a significant increase in unemployment, prompting the government to reevaluate its immigration policies. The Immigration Minister emphasized the need for rules that align with the current economy and job market.
Under the new regulations, a cap of 65,000 fewer temporary foreign workers per year will be imposed, reducing their share of the population to five percent. The rules also include limiting permits for low-wage jobs to one year and decreasing the percentage of temporary foreign workers that an employer can hire.
The changes come in response to the strains on housing and social services caused by the population surge. The government aims to prioritize job opportunities for Canadians and prevent abuses in the temporary foreign worker program. These regulations will take effect on September 26.
