The EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, called for the lifting of restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western long-range weapons to target Russian military sites following a recent attack by Russia. The attack on Ukraine on Aug. 26 resulted in significant damage to civilian and energy infrastructure in 15 oblasts, causing casualties and injuries.
Borrell emphasized the need to enhance Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities and called for discussions on boosting Ukrainian air defense. Ukraine has been pushing to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons to strengthen its defense efforts.
Despite Western concerns about escalation, the U.S. allowed Ukraine to use certain weapons against Russian territory near the border in May. However, the ban on using certain missiles for deeper strikes into Russia remains in place.
The recent escalation of Russian aggression has intensified calls for lifting these restrictions. Ukraine has even developed its own domestic missile-drone in preparation for potential mass attacks.
The issue will be further discussed at an upcoming meeting between EU foreign ministers and Ukrainian officials. The latest events highlight the urgent need to support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and independence.
