US Covid chief hospitalised due to West Nile virus

Anthony Fauci, the prominent figure in the US Covid response, is recovering at home after being hospitalized with West Nile virus. The 83-year-old immunologist experienced symptoms such as fever, chills, and fatigue before being discharged from the hospital, with expectations of a full recovery. Fauci believes he contracted the virus from a mosquito bite in his garden, highlighting the risks of the mosquito-borne disease.

Most people infected with West Nile virus may not show symptoms, but around one in five develop symptoms, according to the CDC. The virus is spread through mosquito bites from infected birds to humans. Currently, there is no vaccine for the virus, which can be fatal in rare cases.

Despite retiring from public service in 2022, Fauci continues to face challenges, including death threats, requiring round-the-clock security. Criticism has also arisen regarding his handling of the Covid pandemic, with allegations of obscuring US funding of the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci has denied these claims, attributing them to political motivations from his disagreements with former President Donald Trump.
