The founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, has reportedly been detained in France, sparking concerns about censorship and political motivations. Durov was arrested at Paris-Le Bourget Airport and is set to appear in court on Sunday. French authorities allege that Telegram’s lack of moderation facilitates criminal activity. American journalist Tucker Carlson warned that Durov’s arrest sends a message to platforms resisting government censorship. Durov, who left Russia due to government pressure, has faced similar challenges in the US, including demands for surveillance access to Telegram, which he refused. Elon Musk also criticized the arrest, highlighting the erosion of freedom. Telegram, with over 950 million users, was launched in 2013 by Durov, who now holds French and Emirati citizenship. The situation has raised alarm about the future of free speech online and government intervention in communication platforms.
