Tepco finishes 4th round of fiscal ’24 water release

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) has successfully completed the fourth round of releasing treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant into the ocean. This ongoing process, which began on August 24, 2024, has seen 62,400 metric tons of treated water, containing small amounts of radioactive tritium, being discharged over eight rounds.

Each round involves diluting 7,800 metric tons of treated water with seawater before releasing it offshore, approximately 1 kilometer from the plant, through an undersea tunnel. Despite concerns, the government and Tepco have confirmed that tritium levels in nearby waters remain below the established safety thresholds.

Looking ahead, Tepco plans to carry out three more rounds of water release before the fiscal year ends in March 2025. Furthermore, the company aims to initiate the dismantling of storage tanks at the plant, left empty after the water release, starting from January 2025. A total of 21 tanks are scheduled to be dismantled by March 2026.
