Protesters in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region voiced their outrage over a drone strike that officials attribute to Turkey, resulting in the deaths of two women journalists. The victims, Gulistan Tara and Hero Bahadin, worked for outlets funded by Kurdish militants and were tragically killed in the bombing. The demonstrators gathered in Sulaimaniyah, holding posters of the journalists and chanting, “The martyrs will not die.”
While Turkey denies responsibility for the attack, Kurdish activists and Iraqi authorities point fingers at Ankara. The journalists were part of a media production house supported by the PKK, a group with bases in northern Iraq. Turkish bombings in the region have prompted widespread civilian suffering, with one activist highlighting the impact on daily life.
Recently, Turkey and Iraq agreed on a military cooperation pact to combat Kurdish militants, following the Iraqi government’s ban on the PKK. The tragic incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for peace and stability in the region.
