The importance of freedom of worship: Pope Francis speaks out against Ukraine’s church ban

Pope Francis has expressed concern over Ukraine’s recent ban on the country’s largest Orthodox church, fearing for the freedom of those who pray. The ban, signed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, has been labeled as “satanic” by Moscow and has raised alarm among religious communities.

The law imposes restrictions on religious groups with ties to Russia, giving the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) a deadline to sever connections with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Despite the UOC’s autonomy declaration in 2020, Kiev has used alleged Russian ties to justify oppressive actions against the church.

Speaking during his weekly prayers, Pope Francis emphasized the right to worship freely in one’s chosen church without fear of persecution. He urged against the abolition of Christian churches and condemned any attempts to seize church property for political gain.

As tensions escalate, the pontiff has called for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, offering mediation to facilitate dialogue. Zelensky’s refusal to engage in dialogue with Moscow underscores the challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
