Opinion: The Power of Independence and Freedom

In August 1991, as Ukraine faced the threat of a hard-line communist coup, the country’s courageous politicians, scientists, and artists embraced the opportunity for independence. Despite Western leaders’ reservations, Ukraine boldly declared independence on August 24, a decision overwhelmingly supported by its population in December of the same year.

While some feared the transition from Soviet rule would spawn local despotism, it was a risk Ukraine was willing to take to break free from long-standing oppression. The distinction between freedom and independence was emphasized by US President George Bush in a speech to the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv.

Independence does not automatically equate to freedom, but the latter cannot exist without the former. Ukraine’s fight for freedom is a testament to the human spirit’s unyielding desire for liberty.

As Ukraine continues its struggle for independence, it echoes the sentiments of history’s liberators, like India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, who recognized the transformative power of freedom. Ukraine’s journey towards true independence, free from foreign influence, remains a beacon of hope for all who cherish the right to self-determination.
