Northern Corridor considers upgrading to fend off Tanzania competition

By ANTHONY KITIMO

The infrastructure development along the main transport routes in the East African Community could impact business along the Northern Corridor, a vital supply route for countries in the region. With the Northern Corridor facing competition from the Central Corridor, authorities are focusing on upgrading facilities to maintain clientele amidst threats of losing business. The new incoming executive secretary of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority, John Deng Diar Diing, aims to prioritize road safety, infrastructure development, and address challenges such as insecurity and non-tariff barriers.

As the region witnesses advancements in the Central Corridor, the Northern Corridor is strategizing to enhance efficiency, reduce accidents, and improve cargo uptake from the Mombasa port. With plans for an expanded Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, the Northern Corridor aims to strengthen its position in the competitive transport sector. Dr. Diing also emphasizes the need for adopting technology to streamline customs processes and enhance safety measures along the corridor to facilitate smooth transit cargo operations.
