Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his willingness to assist in resolving the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The dispute, dating back to the collapse of the Soviet Union, centers around the disputed Karabakh region, formerly inhabited by ethnic Armenians. Putin, during his visit to Baku, emphasized Russia’s historical involvement in the South Caucasus region and its commitment to helping facilitate peace agreements.
He stated, “If we could do anything to facilitate the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, to bring the matter closer to delimitation and demarcation of the border, to unblock logistics and economics, we would be very happy to do so.” The Russian leader also pledged to inform Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan about the discussions in Baku.
While efforts have been made at peace talks, significant hurdles remain, such as Azerbaijani demands for constitutional amendments from Armenia. Despite challenges, both sides are optimistic about reaching a peace deal by the end of the year. The assistance offered by Russia could potentially pave the way for a resolution to this longstanding conflict.
