Restructuring Utility Stores Corporation: Minister Addresses Protests

Amid protests by Utility Stores Corporation (USC) employees across the country, Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain clarified that the USC is not being closed but rather restructured to ensure that only deserving individuals receive relief and discounts on essential items.

Protests in various cities erupted against the potential closure of USC, with employees fearing job losses. The government is exploring alternate measures, potentially including cash transfers to the needy, as part of resizing federal ministries and institutions.

The USC, operating over 4,000 stores nationwide, has been a key entity providing basic commodities at subsidized rates. Discussions are ongoing regarding the future of USC, with the ministry given two weeks to devise alternative arrangements.

The 9th Colour and Chem Expo in Lahore, featuring over 300 exhibitors, highlighted the need to boost Pakistan’s exports in industries like dyes and chemicals. Minister Hussain emphasized the government’s focus on agriculture and reviving the economy.

As Pakistan aims to increase exports and reduce dependency on imports, efforts are underway to ensure stability and address the country’s economic challenges.
