The Utility Stores Corporation (USC) employees recently protested across the country against the proposed closure of the organization. However, Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain clarified that the USC is being restructured and not shut down. The government aims to ensure that only deserving individuals benefit from subsidies and price discounts on essential food items.
The USC, a state-owned enterprise with over 4,000 stores nationwide, provides basic commodities at subsidized rates. The potential closure of utility stores was discussed during a Senate meeting, and the government is exploring alternative measures like cash transfers to the needy.
In a separate event at the 9th Colour and Chem Expo in Lahore, Mr. Hussain emphasized the need to boost Pakistan’s exports and reduce reliance on imports. He also highlighted the government’s focus on agriculture and the revival of the economy.
With over 300 exhibitors showcasing products at the expo, including participants from countries like China and Malaysia, the event aims to promote the dyes and chemicals industry. The minister assured stakeholders of addressing issues like heavy taxes on the tractor industry and emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing production in key sectors.
