Irregular migrants attempt to swim to Spain’s enclave of Ceuta
Reports indicate that more than 15 minors attempted to swim to Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta on Saturday. Taking advantage of dense fog, a group of irregular migrants made the crossing, with most being pushed back to Morocco. However, over 15 minors managed to enter Ceuta.
Irregular migration has increased in the region, with approximately 350 migrants trying to swim across the border on August 22. Autonomous Ceuta’s leader, Juan Vivas, has expressed concern about the high occupancy in migrant shelters, urging the central government for urgent aid.
More than 650 migrants have entered Ceuta this year, with a significant surge in irregular migration from North and West Africa. The Canary Islands have seen the most arrivals, with a 66.2% increase in migration to Spain overall.
From January to August, over 31,000 migrants have entered Spain, according to the Interior Ministry.
