The tragic death of a trainee soldier, Park, led to a cover-up scandal within the South Korean army. A survey conducted by the 12th Infantry Division omitted key questions about abuse and harsh treatment faced by trainees, raising suspicions of a deliberate attempt to conceal the incident.
According to lawmaker Cheon Ha-ram, the survey of active trainees in Park’s unit only partly addressed the issue of harsh training methods. The original survey responses were destroyed to suppress evidence of wrongdoing. The army also failed to investigate previous trainee groups associated with the accused officer, further fueling concerns of a systemic cover-up.
Lawmaker Cheon criticized the army’s actions as a blatant violation of human rights and urged for a transparent investigation into the matter. The army defended its decision to exclude certain survey responses, citing an ongoing investigation by law enforcement agencies.
The case highlights the need for accountability and transparency within the military to prevent such incidents of misconduct and cover-ups in the future.
