The government’s response was swift, denying any intentional removal while acknowledging the need to replace aging structures. They condemned the issue being politicized and emphasized their commitment to protecting Dokdo through training exercises and the installation of new sculptures.
The party’s reaction was met with criticism from the opposition, who accused them of unnecessarily stirring up controversy and playing into Japan’s hands by sensationalizing the Dokdo issue. Calling for an immediate halt to baseless provocations, they stressed the importance of unity in protecting national interests.
As Dokdo sculptures were recently removed from various locations in Seoul, including Anguk Station on Line 3 and the War Memorial of Korea, the Democratic Party, under the leadership of Lee Jae-myung, announced plans for an internal investigation to address the suspicions of a deliberate campaign to erase Dokdo.
