US Officials: Washington Restricting Ukrainian Strikes on Russia for Potential Reset with Moscow, Politico Reports

In a recent report by Politico, officials in Washington have expressed concerns to Kyiv regarding the use of U.S.-made long-range weapons against Russian territory. The Biden administration cites the need to avoid disrupting potential diplomatic resets with Moscow as the reason for maintaining these restrictions. However, there are indications that President Biden may reconsider and lift some of these limitations before the upcoming election.

Ukraine has been pushing for the lifting of these restrictions, arguing that they hinder their war efforts. Despite the White House’s stance, some U.S. politicians, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, have voiced support for Ukraine’s demands. The recent Kursk incursion on August 6 has further fueled Ukraine’s plea for greater military capabilities.

President Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s capture of the Russian town of Sudzha as a demonstration that there are no red lines in Russian escalation. The incursion aims to disrupt Russian logistics and prevent reinforcements to the front in Donetsk Oblast. Additionally, the Pentagon has permitted the use of U.S. weapons in the incursion, while the U.K. maintains restrictions on British-supplied arms.

Overall, the situation underscores the ongoing struggle for Ukraine to secure the necessary military support and capabilities in the face of Russian aggression.
