A Tokyo-based startup, Wonderfy Inc, has established a Japanese-style kindergarten in Cambodia to address the shortage of teachers in the country. With a strong reputation for cognitive development apps for young children, the company aims to provide quality education in the capital city of Phnom Penh before expanding nationwide.
Kei Kawashima, the chief creative officer of Wonderfy, emphasized that the kindergarten will focus on interactive games as a teaching strategy, receiving praise from Cambodian officials. Due to historical challenges, Cambodia’s education system lacks sufficient resources, with only one public institution training kindergarten teachers and limited access to preschool education for 5-year-olds.
Wonderfy’s kindergarten, led by a director with Japanese early childhood education experience, collaborates with Mammy’s Family, a childcare provider from Japan. The school, catering to children aged 2 to 6, offers English as the primary language of instruction along with Japanese lessons and app-based learning materials.
Currently, 40 children, including Japanese nationals, have enrolled since the school’s opening in March, highlighting the potential impact of this innovative educational initiative in Cambodia.
