Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, has stated that the government will not participate in peace talks with rival paramilitaries in Switzerland, opting instead to “fight for 100 years” against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The US-led talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire and easing human suffering did not include representatives from the Sudanese armed forces due to dissatisfaction with the format.
Co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, the talks involved the African Union, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, and the United Nations as part of the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan Group (ALPS). While no ceasefire was reached, progress was made on securing aid access into the country, which is facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The brutal conflict in Sudan has forced millions to flee their homes, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and over 25 million people facing acute hunger. Despite international efforts, the situation remains dire, with no immediate resolution in sight.
