Pakistan Telecommunication Authority denies reports of potential ATM closure and telecom blackout

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has refuted media claims regarding a possible shutdown of automated teller machines (ATM) and a telecommunications blackout in the country due to the expiration of long-distance international (LDI) licenses. LDI operators, responsible for international call services, including Worldcall and Redtone, face license renewal challenges as most have not paid their dues to the Universal Service Fund.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications has formed a committee to address these issues, highlighted in a recent meeting by the PTA. Concerns were raised about potential disruptions to mobile and internet traffic, banking services, and corporate networks if licenses are not renewed.

Despite reports, the PTA clarified that there is no imminent threat to ATM operations or telecommunications. With the telecom association seeking the Prime Minister’s intervention to address recent internet disruptions, the government attributed the issues to VPNs and submarine cable faults.

In light of the economic impact of slowed internet services, efforts are underway to resolve connectivity issues for businesses and individuals across Pakistan.
