Government Approves Sugar Export and Operation Azm-i-Istehkam
The government has given the green light for the export of 100,000 tonnes of sugar, ending the policy introduced by Ishaq Dar that linked sugar exports to domestic price stability. The decision was made during a meeting of the cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). Additionally, a special allocation of Rs20 billion was approved for Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, a counter-terrorism initiative launched to combat extremism in Pakistan.
Operation Azm-i-Istehkam was announced on June 22 after a Central Apex Committee meeting of the National Action Plan. This operation aims to defeat terrorism and extremism by using the country’s military, diplomatic, legislative, and socio-economic resources.
The ECC also made concessions to sugar mills by exempting them from responsibility for domestic price hikes and extending the export period for sugar. The government will monitor the market situation monthly to review the impact of these decisions.
