Explosion Outside French Synagogue Injures Police Officer
A police officer has been injured in an explosion outside a synagogue in southern France, which authorities are calling a deliberate anti-Semitic attack. The incident, which occurred outside the synagogue in La Grande-Motte, involved two cars bursting into flames after a gas canister likely exploded inside one of the vehicles.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal confirmed that the antiterrorism prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation as police search for the suspect. Security at Jewish institutions will be increased following the attack to ensure the safety of the community.
Amidst the chaos, Yonathan Arfi of the CRIF emphasized the severity of the incident, stating that it was not just an attack on a place of worship but an attempt to harm Jewish individuals. While the injured police officer is reported to be in stable condition, the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has pledged full support to the Jewish community and promised to use all available resources to bring the perpetrators to justice. The government officials are scheduled to visit the synagogue to assess the situation and provide reassurance to the affected individuals.
