Kwara police inspector, waste collector nabbed for illegal dumpsite

The Kwara State Ministry of Environment and Forestry has taken a strong stance against illegal dumping in Ilorin by arresting a police inspector and a waste collector found operating an illegal dump site near the airport. The ministry’s enforcement team led by State Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, discovered the site where commercial waste collectors and residents were violating environmental laws by dumping refuse.

Inspector Adamu Usman, the police officer aiding the illegal activity, was apprehended and handed over to the state police command. The erring waste collector had their license revoked and must pay a fine of N250,000. The government is cracking down on indiscriminate refuse dumping, with 124 offenders prosecuted and 8 jailed so far. Buge emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent environmental hazards.

Following the enforcement exercise, there has been a 70% compliance rate and improved waste management practices in the state. The ministry continues its efforts to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment by discouraging illegal dumping and promoting responsible waste disposal methods.
