Japan to develop new strategies to bolster fisheries sector

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced plans to unveil a roadmap for additional support measures for fishery operators affected by China’s ban on Japanese marine products. These measures will be part of an economic package to be finalized this autumn.

The ban on imports was a response to Japan’s decision to release tritium-containing treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant into the ocean. Kishida visited the Onahama fish market in Fukushima Prefecture to mark one year since the start of the treated water discharge.

The government’s goal is to assist fishery operators impacted by the ban, offering them much-needed support during this challenging time. The details of the additional measures will be disclosed by the end of the month, providing a clearer picture of how the government plans to address this issue.
