Government spokesperson for legal affairs Barrister Aqeel Malik has hinted that incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan’s cases concerning the violence on May 9 last year might go to the military courts. Countrywide protests erupted on May 9 last year after the paramilitary Rangers whisked away Imran from the Islamabad High Court in a corruption case, leading to rioting and vandalism at various spots. Imran was later arrested in these cases, with Barrister Malik suggesting the possibility of a military trial due to the attack on military installations.
In a recent interview, Barrister Malik discussed the potential for Imran Khan’s trial in a military court, citing the application of the Army Act for the events of May 9. He explained the process of appeal in military courts and emphasized the limitations of high courts and the Supreme Court in such cases. Imran Khan had previously alleged a plan to try him in a military court, claiming coercion against Lt-Gen (retired) Faiz Hameed.
