German Pop Star Fined for Nazi Salute at Concert
Former reality TV personality and pop star Melanie Muller has been ordered to pay a hefty fine of €80,000 ($89,000) by a German court for making a Nazi salute during a concert and possessing illegal drugs, charges she denies. The district court in Leipzig issued the fine, which was over 14 times higher than the penalty requested by prosecutors.
Muller was filmed raising her right arm in a gesture resembling the Nazi salute at a concert in September 2022. Her lawyers argued that she was merely cheering up the crowd, but the judge found her guilty of using unconstitutional symbols. The court also dismissed her claims that the drugs found in her apartment belonged to a friend.
The 36-year-old singer expressed shock at the verdict, stating that negative media coverage had damaged her career. Despite performing regularly in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Muller claimed that she now only has gigs in Mallorca, a popular destination for German tourists. The Leipzig court’s decision is subject to appeal.
