Brazil refuses to support international critique of Venezuelan elections

On Friday, the Brazilian government decided not to endorse an international declaration challenging the legitimacy of Venezuela’s recent elections, citing disagreements with the document’s tone and content. This statement was supported by the United States, the European Union, ten Latin American countries, and the Organization of American States (OAS), labeling the Venezuelan elections as rigged. Venezuela’s Supreme Court had declared Nicolás Maduro the election winner a day prior.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry stated that its refusal was based on maintaining a unique dialogue with all Venezuelan political factions and a demand for transparency. Brazil continues to push for the release of voting records.

Contrasting Brazil’s neutral stance, Chile, under President Gabriel Boric, has criticized the legitimacy of Venezuela’s elections. The differing approaches of these left-wing leaders highlight their distinct priorities in the region’s political landscape.
