Border guards in Bangladesh detain former supreme court judge near Indian border.

In recent events in Bangladesh, a retired judge of the Supreme Court was detained while reportedly attempting to flee the country. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) confirmed the detention of former judge Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik near the Indian border in Sylhet. Additionally, Awami League leader ASM Firoz was arrested from his residence.

Newspaper Prothom Alo reported that Manik was held at a BGB outpost till midnight. The country has been in turmoil since the collapse of the government led by ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India amidst violent protests over government job quotas. The Army has intervened to restore order, with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus taking oath as Chief Adviser of the interim government.

Following the political upheaval, numerous leaders of the deposed regime, including ministers, have been arrested on various charges. The Bangladesh Army has provided shelter to at-risk leaders, while arrests have been made at different locations, including Dhaka’s river port. The situation remains tense as the authorities crack down on individuals linked to the previous administration.
