Venezuela officially declares election victor — RT News

The recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Venezuela confirms that President Nicolas Maduro emerged victorious in the country’s presidential election last month. Despite claims from US-backed opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia alleging electoral fraud, Caracas authorities maintain that Maduro secured 52% of the vote, leading to his certification as the winner.

However, Gonzalez criticized the court’s decision, voicing concerns of a deepening crisis due to bias and a disregard for the people’s will. While Maduro received congratulations from allies like China and Russia, the US-led G7 countries have expressed reservations about the electoral process’s integrity and refused to recognize the election results.

Brazil and Colombia, along with US support, have called for new elections in Venezuela. In response, Caracas has launched a criminal investigation into Gonzalez and other opposition figures for their role in inciting unrest following the election. The situation has resulted in multiple casualties and arrests related to election-related violence.

Furthermore, there are reports of potential sanctions against Venezuelan officials by the US, raising concerns about an attempted coup. This scenario echoes past events where the US recognized an opposition leader as interim president, leading to further tensions in the region.
