US Navy to Acquire New Amphibious Ships
The US Navy has announced plans to acquire new amphibious ships in the coming years, as part of a multi-ship procurement project approved in the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act. According to a notification sent to the US Congress on August 14, the Navy will purchase three San Antonio-class LPD Batch II amphibious ships and one America-class LHD between fiscal years 2025 and 2027.
US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro stated that these new ships will support amphibious assault missions, special operations, and transportation of US Marines to theaters of operation. The agreement includes the acquisition of an America-class LHD named Helmand Province (LHA-10), to be built at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding shipyard in Mississippi.
The Navy plans to acquire the LPD-33 in fiscal year 2025, the LPD-34 in fiscal year 2027, and the LPD-35 in fiscal year 2029, with estimated costs ranging from $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion. This procurement highlights the Navy’s commitment to maintaining amphibious warships and ensuring the judicious use of taxpayer funds.
