Tripura Schools, Colleges Closed Indefinitely Due to Flash Floods

Following significant rainfall in several districts of Tripura over the last three days, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that all educational institutions will stay closed until further notice. The Education Department has declared a holiday for schools and colleges owing to inclement weather across the state, including severe rains, floods, and landslides. This decision seeks to prioritize student safety among the present weather problems.

Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, dropped a post on his official handle that reads “Due to the current flood situation, it has been decided that all educational institutions, including Government, Government-aided, and private (Schools, Colleges and State-run universities) will remain closed until further notice. A formal notification will be issued shortly.”

The Tripura government earlier this week announced the closure of colleges and schools on August 21 and 22. This order applied to a wide range of educational institutions, including government-run schools, government-aided schools, privately managed schools, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) schools, and madrasas. The decision was made to guarantee the safety of all students and staff throughout the state.

The state of Tripura is currently grappling with the devastating effects of flash floods triggered by relentless heavy rainfall. Over the past few days, continuous downpours have caused severe flooding, resulting in the tragic loss of at least seven lives. In addition to those who perished, two individuals remain missing as search efforts continue.

The severity of the rains has resulted in dangerously high water levels in four main rivers across the state, exceeding safety thresholds. This frightening growth has led over 5,600 families to abandon their homes and seek refuge in emergency shelters established by authorities. The situation remains severe, with the state administration and rescue agencies working diligently to give assistance and protect the safety of those impacted.
