The Nigerian government has approved an increase in fees for the Nigerian passport starting September 1, 2024. The aim of the fee hike is to enhance the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport. The cost of a 32-page passport with five-year validity will be raised from N35,000 to N50,000, while a 64-page passport with 10-year validity will now cost N100,000, up from N70,000.
This adjustment comes shortly after Nigeria’s passport was ranked 92nd on the Henley Passport Index out of 199 countries, reflecting the challenges faced by Nigerian citizens in terms of international travel freedom. Factors contributing to the ranking include reciprocity, economic stability, and tourism opportunities.
Former Nigerian envoys have expressed concerns over the decline in the country’s passport ranking, urging the government to address issues such as drug trafficking and cybercrime to improve its international image. In response, the Nigeria Immigration Service reassured citizens of its commitment to transparency and quality service delivery.
To restore the dignity of Nigeria’s passport, it is essential for the government to address negative perceptions and improve the country’s international standing.
