Nepal Lifts Ban on TikTok Following Assurance of Compliance
Nepal has decided to lift its ban on TikTok, less than a year after blocking the popular Chinese-owned app due to concerns about “social harmony.” Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, made the announcement following a cabinet meeting. This decision comes after Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli issued a directive for equal treatment of all social networking platforms.
The move was reportedly made after assurances from TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, that they would comply with all legal requirements, promote digital safety, and establish channels for content-related requests. TikTok expressed delight at the ban being lifted, emphasizing the positive impact of its platform on Nepali creators and businesses.
The previous government banned TikTok in November due to concerns about content that could disrupt social harmony. Despite facing restrictions in several countries, including India and the US, TikTok remains a popular platform with over a billion monthly users worldwide.
Nepal’s decision to lift the ban reflects a growing trend of governments reconsidering their stance on the app, indicating a shift in perceptions of its impact on society and national security.
