Nepal recently decided to lift its ban on the popular video-sharing app TikTok, nearly nine months after imposing restrictions due to concerns about disrupting “social harmony.” The government’s decision came about during a cabinet meeting, with certain conditions for TikTok to fulfill before resuming operations.
The move comes after TikTok’s South Asia division requested the ban be lifted and committed to following Nepal’s regulations. TikTok now has three months to support Nepal’s tourism, invest in digital literacy efforts, promote public education, and monitor language use on its platform.
The ban, originally implemented in November 2023, had a significant impact on influencers and businesses in Nepal, including influencer Anjana Aryal. With TikTok now allowed to operate again, many are hopeful for the revival of their online presence and income opportunities.
Although TikTok remains banned in several countries, its popularity among younger users remains strong. Creators like Manish Adhikari are hoping to regain lost opportunities and reach a wider audience once again.
