Today marks the funeral of the remarkable journalist, author, and campaigner Nell McCafferty in her hometown of Derry. Known for her fierce advocacy for women’s rights and social justice, she passed away at the age of 80 after a long illness in Co Donegal.
A founding member of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement, McCafferty’s legacy extends beyond her writing and activism. Her influence on the civil rights movement and journalism in Ireland is profound.
The funeral mass will be held at St Columba’s Church, Long Tower, reflecting her roots in the Bogside area of Derry. Tributes pouring in from all over the country speak volumes about the impact she has had on society.
Following the service, a private cremation will occur, offering a final farewell to a true pioneer. For those unable to attend, the requiem mass can be viewed through the St Columba’s Church webcam at 12.30pm.
