NCDC reports 40 confirmed cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 40 cases of monkeypox out of 830 suspected cases in the country. During a briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris revealed that Nigeria will receive doses of the monkeypox vaccine from the United States Government.

An Emergency Operations Centre has been established since monkeypox was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Dr. Idris emphasized the importance of surveillance and preparedness at the state level to control the spread of the disease.

The agency is working to enhance laboratory services and increase testing capabilities in regions with reported cases. Public awareness efforts are underway to educate the public on symptoms and preventive measures of monkeypox.

Dr. Walter Mulombo of the WHO emphasized the need for vigilance in monitoring potential disease-causing microbes in nature. Despite challenges with data collection, efforts are being made to address these issues and control the spread of monkeypox in Nigeria.
