Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed his desire for more African students to study in Italy, sparking debates within the coalition on immigration and citizenship. Tajani’s proposal to grant citizenship to foreign minors who have completed most of their education in Italy faced opposition from hard-right coalition members, but he emphasized the importance of increasing African student numbers in Italy during a conference in Rimini.

Comparing an Italian development initiative for Africa to the Marshall Plan, Tajani highlighted the need for more international students in Italy. Data from Italy’s national statistics institute showed significantly fewer study permits issued in Italy compared to other EU countries, citing language barriers and employment challenges as possible reasons.
