Iran’s President Successfully Gets Cabinet Approved by Hard-Line Parliament
In a historic move, Iran’s reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian managed to secure approval for all members of his Cabinet from the hard-line parliament. This marks the first time in over two decades that a leader in Iran has achieved this feat.
Pezeshkian’s consensus-building approach in selecting his officials proved successful as he received the backing of all power centers within Iran’s theocracy. Notably, he included names that were acceptable to all factions, avoiding any controversial choices.
The newly approved Cabinet includes the country’s first female minister in over a decade, Farzaneh Sadegh, who will serve as the Housing and Road Minister. Additionally, Abbas Araghchi, a seasoned diplomat, will take on the role of Iran’s new foreign minister.
Pezeshkian’s commitment to consensus was highlighted when he shared a photo online standing alongside Iran’s judiciary chief and parliament speaker, both representing different ideologies.
This success is significant given the tradition of dropping proposed ministers in Iran’s parliament. Pezeshkian’s accomplishment is a rare achievement, reminiscent of former President Mohammad Khatami’s tenure in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
