An Iranian hacking group targeted WhatsApp accounts of Biden and Trump administration staffers, Meta Platforms confirmed. The hackers posed as tech support agents for companies like Microsoft and Google. Meta linked this activity to a hacking incident targeting Trump’s campaign. The FBI revealed Iran’s broader effort to interfere in the U.S. presidential election, including hacking Trump’s campaign and attempting to breach the Biden-Harris campaign.
Meta blocked a “small cluster” of targeted accounts in the Middle East, U.S., and U.K., including officials from Trump and Biden administrations. While no evidence of compromised accounts was found, Meta shared its findings with law enforcement. US intelligence says Iran’s cyberattacks aim to undermine U.S. democracy, erode support for Israel, and oppose candidates escalating tensions with Iran. Iran’s retaliation stems from Trump’s actions like ending the Iran nuclear deal and ordering the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
In July, DNI Avril Haines stated Iran supported protests against Israel’s Gaza war, with Iranian-linked groups posing as activists. Messages left with the Trump and Harris campaigns were not returned.
