Hungarian Government Forces Ukrainian Refugees to Homelessness

A recent decree signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban has drastically cut state support for Ukrainian refugees in Hungary, leaving over 3,000 individuals at risk of becoming homeless. In the village of Kocs, northwestern Hungary, almost 100 Ukrainian refugees, mostly women and children, were evicted from their accommodation and left on the streets with no emergency housing available.

The decree now limits state support for refugee accommodation to those from combat zones in Ukraine, based on their registered address. This has particularly impacted Ukrainian refugees from regions like Zakarpattia Oblast, mostly Hungarian-speaking Roma, who were left without subsidized housing in Kocs.

The situation has been criticized by NGOs like the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, who argue that the government’s actions are a violation of Hungarian and international law. The decree has raised concerns about the Hungarian government’s approach to Roma communities and its overall stance on the Ukrainian conflict.

Despite legal challenges and EU awareness, the Hungarian government’s actions have sparked outrage and condemnation for putting vulnerable refugees at risk of homelessness.
