Eskom is revolutionizing the eMobility sector in South Africa by launching electric vehicle charging infrastructure at the Eskom Academy of Learning in Midrand, Gauteng. This initiative signifies Eskom’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting the growth of EVs in the country.
The pilot project includes the procurement of 20 EVs for operational use and the installation of 10 charging stations at various Eskom sites across the country. These sites in Brackenfell, Mkondeni, Tlhabane CNC, and Marathon CNC will form the foundation for Eskom Distribution’s goal to electrify its fleet by 2040 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In partnership with Gridcars, Eskom has installed fast chargers and alternating current chargers to cater to both fleet vehicles and workplace charging. This initiative not only reduces carbon footprint but also stimulates the economy and creates new growth opportunities.
Eskom’s focus on eMobility aligns with the government’s initiatives to encourage the production of EVs locally. Together, Eskom and Gridcars are paving the way for a sustainable future and embracing the global EV ecosystem market.
