In a bid to decongest the city and ensure the safety of commuters, the Delhi government’s Transport Department is set to start scrapping unregistered e-rickshaws that have been impounded. Owners of these vehicles will be given a week to get them registered, failing which the e-rickshaws will be crushed using a roller before being handed over to a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility. This decision follows a high-level review meeting where instructions were given to curb the illegal proliferation of e-rickshaws.
With approximately 1.2 lakh registered e-rickshaws in Delhi, the presence of unregistered ones on the roads has caused congestion and safety issues. The Transport Department has set up dedicated impounding pits and impounded 1,077 rickshaws between August 1 and 21. The illegal e-rickshaws are also known to engage in illegal charging practices and use unsafe batteries.
The need for this action was underscored by a tragic incident where a seven-year-old boy was electrocuted at an illegal e-rickshaw charging point. Through these measures, the Delhi government aims to regulate the e-rickshaw sector and ensure the safety of citizens.
