The World Food Program (WFP) Sudan calls for urgent attention from the international community to prevent the spread of famine. The confirmed famine in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur is the first worldwide since 2017, affecting over 25.6 million people in Sudan.
Due to the conflict, many are resorting to extreme measures to survive, with reports of people eating leaves and grass. The situation has been exacerbated by factors such as economic crisis, inter-communal violence, and climate disasters. Critical infrastructure has been destroyed, leading to a catastrophic hunger crisis.
The longer the war continues, the worse the situation will become, with more people slipping into deeper levels of hunger. The WFP urges the international community to increase diplomatic efforts and funding to help the Sudanese people in their time of crisis.
