Scientists Warn of Prolonged Activity at White Island Volcano
The recent eruption of the White Island volcano in New Zealand has caused disruptions to flights and raised concerns among government scientists. The volcanic activity has led to the cancellation of several flights due to ash drifting across flight paths at domestic airports.
Known to the Indigenous Maori as Whakaari, the volcano could continue venting for “weeks to months” as per the warning issued by scientists. Located 50km off New Zealand’s North Island, the island has been off-limits since a fatal eruption in 2019 that claimed the lives of 22 visitors.
Recent satellite images have shown minor eruptive activity on Whakaari, leading research institute GNS Science to believe it is part of the typical eruptive cycles observed on the island. The institute also suggested that the activity could persist for an extended period.
While residents on the main islands may experience the smell of volcanic gas or mild irritation, the impact is expected to be minimal. New Zealand has raised its volcanic alert level to three out of five, urging caution among residents and tourists.
