The UK Minister for Development Visits South Sudan
The UK Minister for Development, Anneliese Dodds, recently visited South Sudan, emphasizing the need for progress towards stability, safety, and democracy in the country. During her three-day visit, Dodds announced a £74 million aid package to support the most vulnerable populations in South Sudan, who are grappling with the impacts of a humanitarian crisis, flooding, and regional conflict.
She expressed concern over the dire conditions in the country, where over 75% of the population is in urgent need of assistance. Dodds visited the Bentiu IDP camp, meeting with those affected by conflict and flooding, and highlighting the importance of political progress to address humanitarian needs.
In meetings with South Sudanese officials, Dodds stressed the importance of government investment in health and education services, as well as the need for free and fair elections. Additionally, she announced further UK aid to support women-led organizations in preventing gender-based violence and providing support services for survivors.
The Director General of the International Organization for Migration also welcomed the UK’s attention to the humanitarian situation in South Sudan, emphasizing the importance of resources to address the needs of displaced populations.
