Tragedy Strikes in Uganda: Massive Garbage Landfill Landslide

Recently, Uganda was hit by a devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of at least 35 people due to a massive garbage landslide caused by torrential rains. The incident occurred at the Kiteezi landfill near Kampala, where a large chunk of waste broke off, burying several homes in its path.

Following the disaster, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni demanded answers and compensation for the victims’ families. The landfill, which has been a longstanding issue, lacked effective waste management and posed a threat to nearby residents.

Local resident Proscovia Nabafu, one of the survivors, shared her story of displacement and called out the government for its inadequate response. The tragedy shed light on Uganda’s inefficient waste management system and the need for immediate action to prevent such disasters in the future.

In the aftermath, the Red Cross set up shelters for those affected, highlighting the urgent need for donations and assistance. As efforts continue to clean up the landfill, the focus now shifts to finding a long-term solution to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.

Environmentalists have raised concerns about the impact of garbage disposal on Lake Victoria, emphasizing the importance of sustainable waste management practices.
