Uganda is gearing up for commercial oil production with the completion of 74 oil wells in the Tilenga and Kingfisher production areas. The country is set to start commercial production next year following a final investment decision made in 2022 by joint venture partners TotalEnergies E&P Uganda, CNOOC Uganda Limited, and Uganda National Oil Company.
The oil projects include the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) to transport oil to Tanzania and the Uganda Refinery Project. By August 2024, 63 wells have been completed at the Tilenga project, with drilling activities ongoing for the production and injector wells. Construction of infrastructure is also progressing well, with the Tilenga Industrial Area nearing completion.
At the Kingfisher oil field, operated by CNOOC Uganda Limited, drilling for the first oil is almost complete. President Yoweri Museveni kicked off commercial production at the Kingfisher Oil Field in January 2023. The EACOP construction is also underway, connecting Uganda to Tanzania for oil transportation.
Uganda’s oil discovery in 2006 has paved the way for significant economic development, with 1.4 billion barrels deemed commercially viable out of the 6.5 billion barrels found.
