Turkey invited to EU informal foreign ministers meeting in Brussels

Turkey has received an invitation to participate in the Gymnich meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Aug. 29, as confirmed by the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to attend the meeting, which is seen as a positive step towards dialogue by the EU. The invitation aims to mend strained relations caused by previous decisions and recognizes the need for enhanced cooperation in the face of global challenges.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and cooperation with the EU in various key areas to make progress in relations. This includes revitalizing Turkey’s EU accession process, updating the Customs Union, visa liberalization, and restoring high-level dialogues in politics, the economy, transportation, and energy.

After a five-year hiatus, Turkey’s participation in the Gymnich meeting signifies a new chapter in EU-Turkey relations. These meetings play a crucial role in coordinating EU foreign policy, fostering common strategies, and addressing international issues collectively.

Despite challenges such as the Cyprus issue and political opposition, Turkey remains committed to furthering its EU membership negotiations that started in 2005.
