Indonesia Parliament Delays Passing Election Law Revisions

Indonesia’s parliament has postponed the passing of revisions to an elections law, which had stirred up controversies and potential protests. The proposed changes were criticized for bolstering the political power of President Joko Widodo just before his term ends.
The scheduled ratification of the legislative changes, intended to negate a recent constitutional court ruling, was halted as there were not enough lawmakers present at the plenary session. These revisions would have influenced the Jakarta governor race, hindering a government critic, and could have enabled Widodo’s son to enter elections in Java.
Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad disclosed the delay, avoiding potential demonstrations. The decision sheds light on the ongoing political turmoil and power struggles within the Indonesian government.
